India's Virat Kohli is one of the most successful international cricketers at the moment — equally proficient in all three formats of the game (Test, One Day International, and T20). Let's take a look at some highlights from his life and career so far. Source -http://goo.gl/1jcLco
FIRST BATSMAN TO CROSS THE 900-RUN MARK IN A SINGLE IPL EDITION
Virat has scored 919 runs, most by any player in a T20 tournament, so far in IPL 2016. The previous highest was 733 runs by Chris Gayle in IPL 2012 and Michael Hussey in IPL 2013. He also hit four centuries in IPL-9 - most by a player in any T20 tournament. Previous best was three centuries by Michael Klinger in 12 innings for Gloucestershire in the Natwest T20 Blast 2015. Previous most in IPL was two centuries by Gayle in the 2011 season.
INDIAN CRICKET'S 'CHEEKU'
Kohli is known as ‘Cheeku’ in the Indian cricketing fraternity. The nickname was given to him by Delhi’s under-17 team coach Ajit Choudhary when he came to attend a morning practice session straight after getting a haircut from the barber. He had cut his hair short and they stood up - like ‘Cheeku’ the rabbit, in Champak. And the name has stuck since then.
WORLD NUMBER ONE
Following his smashing match-winning knock of 82 runs off 51 balls against Australia at the ICC World Twenty20 on March 27, 2016, Kohli became world no. 1 in ICC T20 rankings. He entered the tournament 24 points behind Aaron Finch but surpassed the Australian with a 68-point lead.
THE YOUNG CHAMP
Kohli's winning streak started early. He captained the victorious Indian team at the 2008 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup held in Malaysia. India beat South Africa to lift the title.
MAN WHO SCRIPTED HIS SUCCESS STORY
India Test skipper Virat Kohli wouldn’t have even dreamt of making so big in cricket if former Delhi off-spinner Raj Kumar Sharma hadn’t mentored him from his childhood. Speaking about his favorite student, Sharma said: “It’s been a very special bonding with Virat. He was 9 when his father brought him to my coaching centre (West Delhi Cricket Academy). It was the opening day of the academy (May 30, 1998) and his father requested me to take care of Virat like a son.” Virat lost his father eight years later and Sharma assumed the role.
'VIRAT A MIX OF SACHIN, SEHWAG & DRAVID’
Former New Zealand skipper Martin Crowe once famously described Virat Kohli as a rare mix of India’s celebrated trio of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag. Heaping high praise on the man from Delhi, Crowe said: “Virat exudes the intensity of Rahul, the audacity of Virender, and the extraordinary range of Sachin. That doesn’t make him better, simply sui generis, his own unique kind.”
FASTEST 7,000 RUNS IN ODI
On Jan. 17, 2016, Kohli became the fastest to score 7,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODI), achieving the feat in just 161 innings. He reached the landmark during his 117-run innings in the third match of the Australia-India ODI series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The record was previously held by South Africa's AB de Villiers, who scored 7,000 runs in 166 knocks.
QUICKEST TO SCORE 25 ODI CENTURIES
In January 2016, Kohli surpassed compatriot and cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar's 18-year-old record by scoring 25 ODI centuries in 162 innings, in a match against Australia. Tendulkar took 234 innings to achieve the same in 1998.
HIGHEST BATTING AVERAGE IN T20I
Making his international debut in 2008, Kohli is the only batsman to have an average of above 50 in T20 Internationals. The middle-order player has so far scored an impressive 1,641 runs in 43 matches and 40 innings at an average of 58.60. His closest competitor is Australia's Aaron Finch with a batting average of 38.96.
